A Tale of Two Cities: Halifax and Victoria
Halifax and Victoria, at opposite ends of our country, are both significant in its history.
I remembered Halifax from the 1990s as a city with interesting old buildings and a pleasant waterfront.
I made the mistake of going there again.
The Citadel is still there, but not much else. You have to seek out the other historic buildings, hidden between the high-rises. The waterfront is now a “boardwalk” that weaves through and under glass-fronted high-rises.
Halifax is a ghastly warning of what Victoria could be turned into if the craze for high-rise developments is not reined in.
“You don’t know what you’ve got ‘till it’s gone.”
